So I’ve always had a girl crush on Carolyn Jones, aka as Morticia Addams. She’s just beautiful and her character is a little dark and twisted. Is that right in my wheelhouse or what? I still laugh (yep, in my head it is a 60’s laugh track) at the idea of cutting the buds off of the roses and keeping the stems. Maybe I should do that some day! Any who, a few years back I wanted to try a new sculpture. I thought of Morticia and decided to give it a go.
This project is extra special to me because I figured out how to manage hands! You may notice the hand on her hip is a bit messy and man hand-ish. I had tried a technique that just didn’t quite work. Her left hand and Thing and much better and by the time I was finished with Thing, I felt like I really had a solid grasp on hands (HA!). I’m no expert, but I’m not scared any more and that’s always a good start!
I really wanted to exaggerate her proportions, so she has near comically small and elongated legs and ankles. Could you imagine trying to take one step in that dress? Here she is from the back:
I think the most fun part of this project was the base. Do you remember the bear rug that was in Addams family manor by the entrance. Anytime anyone stepped on it, it roared. There goes that 60’s laugh track again! Any who, I decided that Tish needed a bear rug of her own and used some clay tricks for the hair texture.
Every time I revisit Morticia, I want to get out my clay and sculpting tools! I so wish these projects didn’t take so many hours, I might do them more!
Morticia won prizes at the NC state fair! If you’d like to know more, check out this post!
