About the URL TheBoredZombie.com

No, I’m not TheBoredZombie! I know, you’re thinking, “Well, who is TheBoredZombie then?” Read on, dear friend, I promise there is no quiz at the end – or is there?

Some time ago (has it really been 10+ years??) I was learning Flash development to build websites and casual games. I loved B-roll horror flicks, casual web games, and small development projects.  I had grand plans marrying the three and creating a flash web site www.theboredzombie.com. The site featured a zombie that attempted to entertain himself by visiting old haunts from his human days and terrorizing the living through casual games like zombie diner dash and zombie pac man.  To prove this story is true, I dug through all the old files and found a few of the flash animations!

I had a vision of a cartoony zombie world full of silly mayhem and competitive high scores. I then wrote lots of design docs, back stories for the characters, and thought hard about what my zombie’s world would be. I really came to love the little guy and his cast of characters even though I never gave him a name. I even wrote a short story to start telling the story of one group of the townies. If you want to read it, download this PDF. If you like that story – you may like my only other attempt at fiction, Dreadful Day Jack.

Look what else I found! My Character sketches from when I was trying to learn vector art. I mostly finished Bo and the rest are doodles. I had a long way to go to be good, but I wasn’t a total loss! You’ll need to click the image to see this too – the file is pretty large and I didn’t want to auto-load it on you.

Life happens. I got a job, found myself crazy busy then less and less interested in my bored zombie and his cast of characters though I never gave up the URL. Two years ago, when I started my blog, it didn’t have a custom URL. I used my nickname Suedre (pronounced sue-DRAY) and called it suedrescreations.blogspot. I didn’t love it right from the start, but I was still feeling out the blog-o-sphere and trying to find my voice. It wasn’t too long and I was hooked. I love creating, I love writing, I love sharing, and I love this community. I decided to go ahead and switch to a custom URL and tinkered with a big long list of them.

No matter how hard I tried to squash him, my bored zombie kept creeping into my head. After a lot of reflection, I realized he was a part of me. I had spent so much time and creative energy into crafting him and his world that he started to melt into my own world. What he really craved was to be a valuable part of his community and reach out to others like him and learn from those that weren’t. And, maybe chomp a brain or two. Not so different than what I’m doing here. Well, except for the brain chomping thing.

I tinkered with a ton of other names. I won’t even list them because I don’t remember most of them and you wouldn’t have either! TheBoredZombie just kept calling to me so I jotted down why I shouldn’t use it.  Every single reason came back to fear of what people might think. I want to be part of this community and don’t want to turn people off because of a name they don’t understand.  I went back to one of my only two blogging rules – Be myself, even when it doesn’t fit neatly into a polka-dot box. TheBoredZombie.com is part of my personal narrative. It tells a story in itself and it reminds me, at just the right times, that my voice is my own and it is OK to go my own way. I believe I have something to say and hope that if even some people that don’t love the name, they will value the content of the blog enough to overlook it. If not, that’s OK too.

As goofy as it is, I’m completely happy with the URL and absolutely would not change it. I have already received a sweet, well intentioned email suggesting I should change it to something more appropriate. I ask you – what is more appropriate for a total nerd girl that loves independent horror flicks,  art in all mediums, television, video games, 80’s pop culture, sci-fi cons, and technology?

 What?? There *IS* a quiz!

This was one of the first diversions I made for flashy version TheBoredZombie.com. I still think I’m kind of funny – Try running through it without answering any of the questions….

Well, that’s it. The whole truth and nothing but the truth. I really enjoyed digging through these files and taking a look back. I don’t notice my own improvement as a creator from day to day. Stepping in the way back machine sure is effective at proving to myself – I’ve come a long way, baby!

  1. Coolio! I knew the backstory on your zombie-guy-fetish, but loved the flashback pictures, etc. You rock! I found out I’m a Romero zombie! Thinking about other zombies and their personalities, I think it got me just right! I can be undead peacefully now.

    • haha! I’m usually a Romero zombie too – though I try to hit the “Undead” zombie because I think they are funnier. ha!

  3. As I lie in bed, feeling like I’m about to die (or afraid I won’t) from this #@%! virus, I find out I’m a 28 day later zombie. I’m not sure if that’s good or not. My sons are great zombie fans, I think I’ll have them take the quiz. Thank you so much for the laughs!!!

Thank you also for the nice note you left for me. I really appreciate the time you take to comment on my blog.

    • Oh no!! I’m so sorry you’re sick, that’s the worst. It seems to be going around. I’m home with a sick kid that may very well share your sentiment. I hope you’ll get to feeling better soon instead of switching to a 28 days later zombie! :)

  4. What a great story behind the name! I never knew the full story (although I gathered snippets of it here and there in your posts), but have always been interested in it! Good for you for not changing it for anyone. It is your space on the web it should be exactly what you want it to be!

  7. I think it’s a great name because it’s memorable. I also like that it’s not specific to a craft because you do so many different things, and who knows what amazing other new things you’ll get up to along the way.

    • Thanks Rachael! I do have lots of great things on my list, but I seem to keep getting distracted with web sites and friends and stuff, lol! Your support means a ton to me. :)

  8. I don’t like zombies, AT ALL. Like I went through a phase of avoiding anything that had to do with them (including Happy Zombie and you haha). But I think since having kids I’ve gotten over the major zombie issues–I even kind of enjoyed Zombieland. They still give me the heeby jeebies though, I saw I am Legend once and refuse to see it or Omega Man again, or read the books, or watch any of those popular zombie shows. NOPE. However, I’ve completely gotten past it with your blog name! I guess you’ve proved through your content that you’re more than a mindless brain eater. Jury’s still out on Happy Zombie… (j/k).

    • ha! not mindless yet, but I won’t make any promises for the future. I’m glad you can tolerate my weird, I can talk they symbolism and allegories of zombie movies until my face falls off, but only around other folks who enjoy those types of nerd fights, promise. :) While I’ve generally grown out of zombies, I think I will always have a soft spot for them – Night of the Living Dead (1968) is one of the only movies in the whole world that actually scared me. Like couldn’t sleep that night scared. It really changed my view of films and what makes them special or just another blockbuster money pit. Everything about it is character/story driven and I think it is still the best one out there. Really, a defining film for me, clearly right?

Do you have a film like that? One that really just rocked your film watching world?

  10. BRAINS! They found out I’m human! I love the It’s an Average Life ending. You could totally go somewhere with that (I don’t want to leave any spoilers here). I love the bored zombie and you shouldn’t ever change it! Also, your flash animations. they’re great.

    • Thank you! I’m excited someone actually read it! I had to cut about 400 words for a writing site so it feel a little compressed, but fun none the less. Quick, make it a screen play!

The flash was fun. I almost miss it a bit. It was so usable and easy to script. I suppose I could learn the new tricks, but I’d rather make quilts. :D
