The Sunday Geekery’s Car Keys are cooler than yours!

Hey there Horde readers! Some of you may remember when I recently featured Pop De Milk’s Chain Chomp key ring tutorial. I not so subtly suggested that I really wanted a pair. Lo and behold, look  what is on my key ring! Seriously Christine, you are the bomb diggity! Not only am I sporting the coolest keys in the room, but they are officially quiet too. That’s like win with chocolate sauce. Did you miss the link – sign up for TheBoredZombie’s email newsletter, The Horde. You’ll get updates from the blog as well as my favorite web finds like this...
The Sunday Geekery goes to Carlo’s Bakery!

The Sunday Geekery goes to Carlo’s Bakery!

Today marks the last day of summer vacation. Tomorrow we return to school, regular schedules, and a bit more normal! Summer vacation had been so challenging this year shuffling around from this camp to that camp with a few out of town commitments just to make it more complicated. Seemed like to me, we needed a little time away just for the sake of being away. My kid has been completely checked in to all things Cake Boss and has said, “I want to go to NJ” so many times I could hardly stand it anymore. So – we went to Carlo’s Bakery in Hoboken, NJ! I love these kind of trips. We pick something, usually something small, and travel around it. We’ve done it this way for events in Chicago, Memphis, Atlanta, and NYC. Every single time we end up discovering a city or place we would have never had reason to step foot in otherwise. For this trip, it was Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Baltimore was a good place for us to stop between NC and NJ. Since the trip fell over the 4th of July, it seemed like a good time to be at the Inner Harbor for fireworks! We left on Thursday, and it was rough y’all. We started to bring Hurricane Aurthur with us and it rained all the way from the VA border to Baltimore. Add horrendous traffic through DC, crazy road changes, a tractor trailer fire, and all sorts of other road non-sense and our drive went from 5 hours to nearly 8! We tried to meet LeeAnna from Not Afriad of Color...
The Sunday Geekery: The con is coming! The con is coming!

The Sunday Geekery: The con is coming! The con is coming!

Oh how I love the Dragon Con! We’re getting close now, less than two weeks! We’ve been several times, usually going on the even years. I’m always bummed at guest announcements and on the off years, but this year I’ve been able to the happy dance more than once! I’m sure many of you know Comic Con, Dragon Con is a bit different. There are amazing celebrities, artists, and interesting panels, but not really the super A-list types. Dragon Con still feel fan driven to me. Yeah, the crowds are huge, the lines are long, and it is hot as shit in downtown Atlanta, but there’s still wookies and folks with full leather armor running around living their dreams and passions. I had intended to tell you all of the amazing people and things I was planning to see over the weekend, but there’s still no schedule! grrrr! No worries, I’m watching for it like a hawk and will probably not be able to contain myself once I have the list. My interests are so varied, I rarely stay on any single fan track. Never know – might see a video game developer, and artist, voice actor, scientist, or a skeptic. Could be anything which is so darn exciting! Tale of Woe One of my absolute favorite parts of the Con is what I consider passionate performance art – cos-players. I can find myself a spot and watch them walk by for hours and I get just as excited the fifth time I see Ghostbusters or Mario as the first. When someone is wondering around as a character I...
Maker Faire NC 2014 awesomeness!

Maker Faire NC 2014 awesomeness!

My shoulders hurt, my calves are sore, I’ve had a lingering headache most of the day, and I’ve been hungry enough to eat through the house. Let me tell you – it is the BEST. HANGOVER. EVER. Every second that I’ve put into getting ready for the Maker Faire NC yesterday was totally worth it. I can’t find enough words to describe how impressed I am with Maker Faire NC organizers, other Makers, and TheBoredZombie.com volunteers.  Take a look at some photos from yesterday with some of my favorite sights, sounds, and moments from a Maker’s perspective. You gotta start somewhere and I started with pole and drape early on Friday. I finally met Kevin, the organizer, in person and knew I was in good company. He totally gets it and has been plans for Maker Faire NC. I’m pretty sure he and the rest of the organizers and volunteers are going to make it happen and I can’t wait be there! By GO TIME, everything was in place and ready for event guests to come by and try out sewing for themselves. My kid was way more excited about her Maker badge than I was about mine (which is saying a lot)! That kind of makes my heart sing. When she came back later in the afternoon she started putting some of the blocks together. Do you know – she actually cared about seam allowance! She really wanted to do well with and managed to put them right sides together, every time! Oh how I love Julie and Rebecca! They get it too y’all and were so good...
The Sunday Geekery: A hodge-podge of awesomeness

The Sunday Geekery: A hodge-podge of awesomeness

I’ve been toiling away in the background sewing my face off and making a zillion little preparations for Maker Faire North Carolina. It looks like Bowser will make his big debut and another brand new quilt you haven’t seen yet! The crowd sourcing project is coming along too – What’s that you ask? Worry not, I’ll spill all of the beans just before Maker Faire. I’m over the moon excited about this event and so thrilled with the support from the community. What support you ask? Worry not, I’ll have lots of love coming for some amazing people just before Maker Faire too. Between actual work (Why do they keep making me do stuff for a paycheck??), Mommy work, Maker Faire prep, and getting myself organized for an upcoming retreat and quilt show, I’ve had to take a few hours of downtime here and there, lest I go insane. So, what have I managed to find time for? It is actually a pretty big list! Godzilla Now you know how I love a monster movie! There’s no way I wasn’t going to find time to watch Godzilla when it was still in theaters. How I managed to pick the movie time with a gaggle of 12 year old talking and popcorn throwing boys, I’ll never know. The movie was fun. Yep, I can poke about a million holes in it, the build up is slow, and it has an unnecessary human interest plot line. I forgive it for all of those things because it also has BIG FREAKING MONSTERS EATING THE CITY.  Win! There’s some pretty fantastic art too....
The Sunday Geekery Loves My Mama!

The Sunday Geekery Loves My Mama!

Happy Mother’s Day to all of us mothers! I hope you’re relaxing, being treated well by all the kiddos and enjoying a little “you” time. I’m looking forward to a some sewing time and the Triangle Modern Quilt Guild meeting tonight. I’m also curious to see what my kid has been cooking up all yesterday evening in her room. I suspect I’m getting ready to be sporting the awesomest silly band bracelet or necklace ever! Given that it is Sunday, I thought it a good time to tell favorite bad ass Madre Geekery story.  Truth: My mother was ready to get in a fist fight to bring home Super Mario Brothers 3 for Christmas. Remember back in 1990, before amazon and EB games pre-orders, you had to go to toy store on game release day and hope you get one of the eight or ten copies that they had. Super Mario Brothers 3 was a big deal to me and my brother. Like most of the Nintendo kids, we had seen The Wizard and read the Nintendo Power articles and couldn’t imagine anything cooler than a mario raccoon suit. This game was going to be epic and we just had to have it. Like really – nothing else in the world matters – had to have it. According to the story, my mother had arrived at the store super early and was very near the front of the line arguably guaranteeing her one of the copies.. Rather than pass out the games to the first people in line, they unlocked the doors and started a foot race. Since it...
