Harry Potter Bookcase Quilt: Block 20

Harry Potter Bookcase Quilt: Block 20

Block 20 is an all book block. Since it sits right next to the Mandrake, I thought I would put some Herboloby books in there. Believe it or not – these books took FOREVER. I had some real troubles getting a few of them where I wanted them to be. In the end, I’m super happy with them and they are one of my favorite sets, even if they don’t stitch out perfectly. If you’re going to use the files, here’s some details about the stitch outs – don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Winogrands Wondrous Water Plants

This book actually stitches out very well. It literally took hours to digitize. Originally, there were no mushrooms at the bottom and several huge ones up the spine. The words should have snaked around the mushroom shapes, but I just couldn’t make it work. The file is split. If you use it, stitch the TOP file followed by the bottom file.

If you’re a Warcraft player, you’re likely to recognize the inspiration for this book – my favorite zone – Zangermarsh! The funny thing is that I kind of hate playing in Zangermarsh, but I love the look of it. It is a bit dark and ethereal. The critters are fun to watch and the zone is great from the ground and air. Here’s a screenshot:

Healing at Home With Herbs

This one took a while to digitize too! It was mostly just indecision. I finally settled on the mortar and pestle, but didn’t like them plain. I tried and tried to digitize some herbs. I finally realized that what I was imagining really looked more like hand embroidery and wasn’t really something I could easily copy by machine. I ended up putting a cut out in the fills and after it stitched I went in with perle cotton and put in some sprigs and leaves. Not bad eh?

If you’re curious, the striped effect is a variegated thread.I though I would just try it out and had no idea I’d be so lucky and have it line up so well!

1000 Magical Herbs and Fungi

Oh boy this book. I’m not even going to tell the whole story other than to say this is the third try at it and the first thing I completely dumped from the quilt. I haven’t mentioned it before, but I have a self imposed rule with this quilt. This project is supposed to be all about learning and trying new and crazy ideas. Even when my results are less than desirable, I keep it. I could point to 15 places I would have changed if it weren’t for this rule, but the first go at this book was so bad – I couldn’t even stand to walk past it!

The book has two files, one for the 1000 and Magical Herbs and Fungi and another for the Leafy flower thing. I’ll tell you – neither stitch perfectly. The leafy flower thing has a huge obvious mistake and this font isn’t the best embroidery font ever. They do stitch though and it was good enough so I kept it!

Invisible Book of Invisibility

Ha! I’m so funny. (It’s a book mark sticking out of an invisible book – in case you can’t SEE IT. HOLY COW, will I just stop with the funny already?)

Muggle Studies

It’s a Plumbob and another mashup!

I seriously thought there wasn’t better possible mash up for Muggle Studies. I’m so glad to have found a place for the Sims since it is one of my all time favorites that I bet I wasted more than 1000 hours on. Anyone remember the Mall of the Sims? Anyway. I tried to stay as close to the game as possible and every color, font, etc it a nod right back to something I remember about playing the game.

If you stitch it – you will notice I still had not quite managed to get the fills overlaid enough. There is a small space between the top and bottom of the plumbob. It is what it is – I’ll just pretend it is on purpose!

Stop Talking and Make With The Files Already…

If I haven’t scared you off by describing my pain, you can download all of the files I used for this block in .pes, .jef, and .vp3. Enjoy!

Check out the TBZ’s Harry Potter Quilt index. It is full of links including a link to the original project and patterns as well as links to any of TheBoredZombie.com’s related posts and other custom blocks complete with downloadable embroidery patterns or applique templates. You can also see more about my machine and software in this post.

Want to find all the mash ups? Besides the ones in this block, there’s a little bit of Mario Brothers, Dragon Quest, Lego,  Disney’s Maleficent (the real one, not the new one), George RR Martin books, and an accidental Star Wars nod.

  1. That is so cool how the variegated thread worked out! It must be magic.

  2. I love each new block. Great work!

What say you?
