The Sunday Geekery: South Park – Stick of Truth

The Sunday Geekery: South Park – Stick of Truth

Y’all. This Game. If you know anything about Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and their flagship South Park, then you know their newest venture, South Park: Stick of Truth video game (affiliate link) is offensive with a capital ‘O’ ‘FFENSIVE’. Really, if you have one single sensibility stay clear of this one. Since I have no sense or sensibilities, I can say this is one of the best games I’ve played in a while. Other than one particular portion of the story that crossed a line, even for me, I found this one to be a true gem.

The gist: You’re the new kid in town. Pensive, silent, and with a mysterious past. Your parents send you out into the neighborhood to meet some new friends when you run into Butters. It isn’t long before you’re right in the middle of a town wide LARP session. Cartman and the humans vs. Kyle and elves. Because it is South Park, bad things happen, the adults are clueless, and Taco Bell is evil.

Between all of the fart jokes, random penises, and a really bad night on an alien spaceship, this game is fun to play. The mechanics are well done and careful not to put the player through stupid hoops that RPGs are famous for. As a matter of fact, the game sticks a big giant middle finger at all of those tedious mechanics though sarcasm and little jibs here and there. It continues to make the game play about the player – it doesn’t require HOURS of level grinding, it has fast and fun upgrades, and rewards players well for walking off the beaten path. There are lots of great diversions like collecting Facebook friends, the search for Chinpokomon, hunting for Jimbo, defeating Al Gore’s ManBearPig and clearing the town’s homeless. The funnest diversion, IMHO, searching for items to change the look of my character. It’s like Barbie for those of us with the maturity of a 15 year old boy.

I give South Park: The Stick of Truth a big fat thumbs up! Great mechanics, funny, endearing, offensive, and gamer centric. I great find a refreshing play in a sea of stuff that sucks.  I suspect I’m nearly finished with my trip though South Park on the last mission – I better get to it!

    • Oh it is pretty true to the show, except it is uncensored, which is sometimes very very very scary! lol!
